Passing by the corner coffee shop, I saw this ad for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC.

It got me thinking - The City of Vancouver predicts severe impacts from the effects of climate change. And some of the more dire projections from Metro Vancouver include up to 30% more precipitation and a 45cm sea level rise, along with heavily increased flooding, erosion, landslides, forest fires, droughts, air quality degredation, and pests [PDF report].
Currently the games has a marketing budget of $127 million (not including the value of partner marketing like the above execution), and a security budget of $900 million ($600 million of which came from the federal government). Within ten more Winter Olympic games (40 years) parts of Vancouver will be devastated by climate change. The health and safety of all Canadians will be impacted - isn’t that a greater security risk? It’s time that we set aside some money for a new campaign:
In the meantime, the citizens of Canada have our own campaign, and it’s called KYOTOplus. It revolves around our country’s role at the United Nations climate change talks this December in Copenhagen, and we want to send our delegates there with one strong, clear message: Canadian residents want meaningful action on climate change. Sign the KYOTOplus petition, and forward this post to anyone you know in Vancouver.

wickid culture jam image. Canadians often forget we’re both vulnerable and responsible - time to wake up!
