Some good news for the BC orcas
Sarah King
Things seem to be looking up a bit for the southern resident orcas as two new calves were seen on February 6th off Vancouver Island. The good news comes after reports earlier this year that 7 orcas had gone missing including 2 calves. While 2 new babies is good news, this addition only puts the endangered southern residents at 85 and they continue to face many threats including declining salmon stocks, increased boat traffic, toxic contamination, and acoustic impacts.
Greenpeace and 8 other environmental organizations filed a lawsuit against the federal government for their failure to legally protect the resident orcas’ critical habitat. It is imperative that the orcas’ habitat is properly protected to ensure their recovery.

The government has the power and authority to look over the welfare of the ocean and its habitats, so sometimes we have to blame them. Especially now that more and more marine animals are becoming endangered, the authorities should find ways to protect them.

Congrats Sarah and the other enviros involved!
CBC reports that the B.C. government issued an order under the Species at Risk Act to legally protect the areas where the northern and southern resident populations killer whale live.

Great work pressuring the powers that be. Funny quote from the DFO mouthpiece: “It’s hard to say whether or not that [lawsuit] influenced our decision.”
