Will Harper Buy McGuinty a Reactor?
Shawn Patrick Stensil
The Harper government is shoveling more money down the nuclear black hole. The Globe and Mail reported Friday that the Harper government is giving Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) an additional $ 100 million to pay for delays in repairing the Bruce and Point Lepreau nuclear stations. AECL has been signing contracts (with Harper the government’s permission) that put the tax-payer on the hook if delays or cost over-runs occur. And guess what? The contracts AECL signs are secret, so we may be bailing out AECL again.
The Bruce A and Point Lepreau delays show that AECL can’t be trusted with tax-payer money. In the next few weeks AECL will submit its final bid to sell its prototype Advanced CANDU Reactor (ACR) to Ontario. Ontario has said the purchase the ACR is contingent on AECL – the Canadian tax-payer - paying for cost over-runs and delays. Otherwise put, Dalton McGuinty wants Canadians to buy him a reactor.
Canadians shouldn’t be forced to buy Premier McGuinty a reactor. McGuinty should be investing in cheaper and cleaner green energy instead.
