Need for nuclear a “myth”
Shawn Patrick Stensil
The biggest obstacle to building a renewable-based electricity system in Ontario is the “myth” that large centralized nuclear and fossil plants are the only source of reliable power, says Herman Scheer, the Father of Germany’s Renewable Energy Law. He’s right. Energy Minister George Smitherman says nuclear plants are part of Ontario’s “energy DNA,” showing the government isn’t open to doing things differently.
Smitherman’s loyalty to the nuclear lobby is getting in the way of Ontario building a 21st century energy system. Germany installed 16 terawatt-hours of renewable generation in 2007 - that’s more than all the power produced by the Pickering B nuclear station. And yet his government has so far refused to even consider replacing Pickering B - Ontario’s smallest nuclear station - with green power.
The CBC’s 5th Estate recently featured Herman Sheer in an investigative report that questioned Ontario’s commitment to green energy. You can watch it below.
