Saskatchewan Beware

A day after Ontario’s private nuclear operator Bruce Power was passed over for building new nuclear reactors at its site on Lake Huron, it announced that it will carry out a “feasibility study” on building new nuclear plants in Saskatchewan, says the Globe and Mail today.

I’m pretty sure what’s really going on is that Bruce Power is assessing whether the Saskatchewan government will give it the same kind of sweetheart deal it has with the Ontario government.

In Ontario, Bruce Power leases a nuclear site from the provincial government. The lease agreement passes on the liability for such things as cost over-runs onto the rate-payer. The Ontario government also agreed to build a $ 600 million dollar power line to transmit Bruce Power’s electricity to Toronto.

It’s a good deal for Bruce Power. It’s a bad deal for rate-payers. Saskatchewan beware.

Premier Wall and Harper are both dedicated to making sure the Haves become the HaveMores-nothing else matters. Nuclear will be rammed through as fast as possible like Harper with the tarsands. There will be a sham of public consultation with the main event going on behind the scenes. Nuclear will happen in Sask. unless citizens get off their butts and say NO.

Saskatchewan claimed on The National to want to learn from AB’s mistakes in their sure-to-be-short iteration of the oil boom. Yet if AB can’t keep up with inflation and sprawl enough to build firehalls, homeless shelters, low-income housing and sustainable suburbs, how is Saskatchewan supposed to with an even lower oil tax rate?
If I were Saskatchewan, I’d welcome the chance to build sustainable infrastructures that a carbon tax presents. I’d be more worried about building sustainable suburban developments like these: http://www.canadiangeographic.ca/Magazine/ja05/alacarte.asp
…in Saskatoon and Regina, than I would be about re-electing a government with a Neoconservative environmental platform, that would’ve had us quagmired in Iraq as long as Americans were dumb enough to elect Republicans.
